Correction — 22 October 2026: The original article reported a 7.97% KOSPI fall. Adjacent daily closes give a 7.57% decline. It also described an intraday WTI quote as a settlement. This review replaces that mixed-time snapshot with provider daily closing observations. This is a retrospective review using daily history retrieved on 2026-10-22, not a live report or a reconstruction of every quote available at original publication.
A regional decline is not a global equity result
KOSPI fell 7.57%, while the S&P 500 rose 0.33% and the Nasdaq rose 0.08%. The direction of the US moves therefore differs from the earlier intraday snapshot. A falling Korean index cannot be used to describe the completed US session as an equity sell-off. Korea also closes before the US cash market, so these returns cover different information windows.

Oil and gold rose together
WTI gained 3.03% and gold gained 1.51% in the daily futures series. These are changes in the quoted contracts, not measured changes in inflation or investor demand for safety. The 10-year yield observation fell by 10.1 basis points. Their coexistence describes the tape; it does not identify a shared cause.
Method and limits
Percentage changes use (value ÷ previous available daily value − 1) × 100, before rounding. Yield changes use the difference in percentage-point quotes multiplied by 100 to obtain basis points. Index levels are in points; futures quotes are in US dollars per barrel for WTI and per troy ounce for gold.
Each linked Yahoo Finance history is the data source for that row. These provider observations have not been independently checked against exchange settlement records. The futures series can change its referenced contract over time and should not be treated as the return on a continuously held investment. A date shared by two markets does not make their closing times simultaneous.
The earlier news-based explanations are omitted because their relevance to these measured moves was not established. For the calculation workflow and trading-session examples, see How to Read Daily Market Returns Without Mixing Trading Sessions.
